42:25 So he poured out his fierce anger on them,

along with the devastation 1  of war.

Its flames encircled them, but they did not realize it; 2 

it burned against them, but they did notice. 3

[42:25]  1 tn Heb “strength” (so KJV, NASB); NAB “fury”; NASB “fierceness”; NIV “violence.”

[42:25]  2 tn Heb “and it blazed against him all around, but he did not know.” The subject of the third feminine singular verb “blazed” is the divine חֵמָה (khemah, “anger”) mentioned in the previous line.

[42:25]  3 tn Heb “and it burned against him, but he did not set [it] upon [the] heart.”

[55:7]  4 tn Heb “Let the wicked one abandon his way.” The singular is collective.

[55:7]  5 tn Heb “and the man of evil his thoughts.” The singular is collective.

[55:7]  6 tn Heb “let him return.” The singular is collective, meaning “let them.”

[55:7]  7 tn The imperfect with vav (ו) conjunctive after the jussive indicates purpose/result.

[55:7]  8 sn The appeal and promise of vv. 6-7 echoes the language of Deut 4:25-31; 30:1-10; and 1 Kgs 8:46-53, all of which anticipate the exile and speak of the prerequisites for restoration.
